Mounties Earn ACAA Silver Medals
The Mount Allison women's basketball Mounties are headed to CCAA Nationals. The Mounties lost the ACAA Championship game 73-59 to #2 ranked Holland College but by virtue of their silver medal performance, the Mounties have earned one of the two ACAA spots at Nationals. The CCAA women's basketball nationals will be played at Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, BC) from March 19th to 21st, 2015.
The Mounties, who finished 5th during the regular season, were able to dispose of Crandall 72-52 during Friday's quarter-final game. Third year Mountie Maddy MacDonald led the Mounties with a remarkable 8 three pointers and 25 points and was named player of the game. This setup a clash with the #1 ranked STU Tommies in Saturday's Semi-final.
The Mounties had not beaten STU in 6 seasons but they were able to continue their strong shooting and build a solid first half lead which set up an exciting 2nd half. This was enough for the Mounties to hold on for a thrilling 70-69 victory, giving the Mounties a spot in Sunday's ACAA final and earning them a berth in CCAA Nationals. Freshman guard Sarah McGeachy led the Mounties attack with 21 points. Player of the game for the Mounties was Mackenzie Gray. The fifth year ACAA All-Star will make her first CCAA Nationals appearance.
On Sunday the Mounties fell just short of the ACAA title, falling 73-59 to Holland College. After the game the Mounties were awarded ACAA silver medals for their performance.
The Mounties will depart for CCAA Nationals on Tuesday, March 17th. It will be the first appearance at nationals for the Mounties since the 2005-2006 season.
