Mounties show great fight in national semi-final loss to Dawson

Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association
Women's Basketball 2018 National Championships

Hosted by Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB
March 14-17, 2018

Game Summary: March 16, 2018

Match 8: 8:00 pm (ATL)      Dawson 65  Mount Allison 53

ACAA champions Mount Allison Mounties took on RSEQ champs Dawson Blues, behind the support of a large, energetic home-town crowd.

Dawson showed their experience by jumping out quickly to a 10-0 lead after the first two and a half minutes. Lauren Chitty and Kiersten Mangold finally got the Mounties onto the scoresheet. Dawson's height advantage allowed them to score easy hoops, giving Dawson a 20-11 lead after the first.

Unfazed, the Mounties answered with several quick baskets early in the second. On defence, their 'bend but don't break' approach frustrated the Blues, who picked up a couple ill-advised fouls in response to gritty play by the Mounties. MtA continued to chip away, and trailed the Blues by a score of 33-27.

Dawson re-asserted control with five quick points to open the second half. Both teams tightened up their inside defense, but the Blues were able to find more opportunities than Mount Allison, outscoring the home side by 9 in the third, and building their lead to 55-40. Mount Allison continued to look for ways to penetrate the Dawson defense in the final quarter, ultimately falling 65-53 in a spirited, entertaining performance by both teams.

Dawson now moves onto the Gold medal match, where they will take on the Humber Hawks. Mount Allison will play ACAA rival MSVU in a Bronze qualifier.

Leading the way for Dawson was Nelly Owusu, 17 points and 9 boards, while Eleanore Marciszewski added 11 and 8. The Mounties got 16 points and 9 rebounds from Kiersten Mangold, and 15 points, 6 boards and 4 steals from Lauren MacEachern.

Players of the Game: Nelly Owusu, Lauren MacEachern.
