Mounties kick off AUS swim season at UNB

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Dalhousie Tigers women's and men's swimming team dominated the first day of competition at UNB's Amby Legere Invitational, the first meet of the Atlantic University Sport season. 

The Dal women lead the team standings by more than 260 points after day one. 

The Tigers' men's team leads Acadia by 15 points following the first day's events. 

Tigers swimmers won all 18 events on day one, and swept the top three spots in both the men's and women's 200-metre backstroke events, the women's 400-metre individual medley, and the women's 100-metre freestyle. 

Individually, Dal's Gavin Dyke won the men's 50-metre, 100-metre and 200-metre freestyle races. Claire Yurkovich won the women's 200-metre backstroke and the women's 400-metre individual medley. 

Dal's Alexis Bragman and Victoria MacDonald shared victory in the women's 100-metre breaststroke, both finishing in a time of 1:18.54. Bragman also won the women's 50-metre breaststroke. 

Acadia's Brett Liem finished second in both the men's 50-metre freestyle and men's 50-metre breaststroke. In the 50-metre free, Liem finished two one-hundredths of a second behind Gavin Dyke. 

Noah Horwood led the host UNB Varsity Reds, finishing third in the men's 50-metre breaststroke and fifth in the 50-free. 

Geraint Berger led the Mount Allison Mounties, finishing second in the men's 100-metre free and third in the men's 50-free. 

The 2017 Amby Legere Invitational wraps up Sunday. 

Competition begins at 10:00am.
