It wasn’t pretty but the Mount Allison men's basketball Mounties defeated the visiting University of Maine - Machias Clippers 78- 53 on Sunday; in a post-holiday exhibition game at McCormack gymnasium. It was the men's basketball Mounties' first game since November 30th when they defeated the MSVU Mystics 83-69 in ACAA league play. The Mounties entered the holiday-break with a first place, 5-2 record and they were ranked 10th nationally in the CCAA.
Garnet and Gold will resume ACAA league play this Saturday, January 11 when they they travel to Saint John to play the UNBSJ Seawolves at 4:00 pm.
On Sunday, a sluggish Mounties team managed 34-points in the first-half, before outscoring the visiting Clippers 44-25 in the second-half to emerge victorious. The Mounties played all 12 roster members while freely substituting throughout the game as a final tune up, before playing UNBSJ this Saturday. Not a single Mountie starter scored in double figures but rather a combination of 11 different Mounties contributing at the offensive end. It was the support from the bench which led the Mountie attack as freshman guard Emmanuel Octavious came in to score 13 points and haul down 9 rebounds. Third year forward James French added 11 points while Toronto native Emanuel Adugna contributed 10 points . Noah McCarthy added 9 points and led all Mountie rebounders with 10 boards. Last year team MVP, Aram Currie, returned to the line- up after a first semester injury and hit 3 three pointers in limited playing time to add 9 points to the balanced Mounties attack. Rounding out the scoring was Diangelo Woodside with 8 points, Brett Curtis 7, Bryden MacDonald 6, Sam Pierson 3 and Zach Boudreau with 2.
