The Mount Allison Mounties had a successful Ontario swing Oct. 19-21, winning both of their games. This served as final preparation for ACAA league play beginning this weekend when they open their season at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax on Oct. 28 in a 3 p.m. start.
Following a quick overnight stop in Quebec City and a brief tour of Parliament Hill the following day, the Mounties visited both Ottawa and Kingston for their final pre-season exhibition games. Supported by a number of alumni, family, and friends, the garnet and gold first emerged victorious in the nation's capital where they defeated the Algonquin College Thunder 85-81 in a physical and closely contested encounter. Ten different Mounties hit the score sheet in a balanced attack led by fourth year senior Mack Chisholm of a Fall River, NS with 17 points. James French of Moncton, NB added 12 points, as did freshman Sam Pierson of Kingston, ON. Aram Currie of Riverview, NB added 10 points while Fredericton native Seongwoo Park and Sackville's Jeshua Becker each contributed 9 points for the Mounties who trailed 39-38 at the half, but they used a strong fourth quarter to escape with a road win.
After travelling to Kingston to play a controlled scrimmage versus Queen's University Golden Gaels, the Mounties won their second game of their Ontario swing with a come from behind 82-71 win over the host St. Lawrence College Vikings. Aram Currie, the team's Rookie of the Year a season ago, led the Mounties with 21 points while fourth year team captain Jeshua Becker added 10. For the second game in a row, Coach Steve Chapman went deep into his bench using 12 different players in this final exhibition game completing their pre-season play.
Locker room notes:
*Several family members and friends as well as alumni were on hand for both the Mounties games in Ottawa and Kingston.
*Long time supporter of MtA athletics, and former MtA teammate and close friend of Coach Chapman, Norval McConnell ('80) accompanied the team for the four-day trip. Norval also organized and arranged an alumni sponsored team supper in Kingston where he spoke to the team about his MtA experience.
*Ryan Michalski ('00), a former player of Coach Chapman's from 1996-2000, travelled from Toronto to join the Mounties for the team supper and attended the Mounties game vs St. Lawrence College.
*Past Board of Regents Chair, Bruce McCubbin ('63) and his wife Betty ('64) were in attendance at the Ottawa game.
*Mounties 14 player roster is from far and wide — one from BC, one from AB, one from ON, one from QC, one from PEI, two from NS, and seven from NB.
*Of the 14 roster members, only five players have played more than one year of University basketball or in the ACAA — the future is bright.
*The Mounties have finished second place two years in a row in the ACAA; they expect to be right back in the thick of things this year.
