The Mount Allison Mounties badminton team finished in first place collecting 91 of a possible 100 points to win their ACAA home tournament held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 in the McCormack Gymnasium. Université Sainte Anne finished in second with 59 points while Dal AC and University of King's College finished with 50 and 47 points.
Although the Mounties had the most points there were several matches that tested them and showed that there will be some highly competitive contests in the remaining tournaments as each school prepares to put forth their best line-up for the ACAA championships in February.
In men's singles Mount Allison's Jaryd Morrissey and Hamza Munawar finished the day with 17 points. Morrissey ended in second place losing his final match to Joel Arsenault of Université Sainte Anne, while Munawar was undefeated in his section. In women's A singles Maddie Alvarez of King's defeated Gillian Tetlow to take first place while Mount Allison's Elizabeth Baker won all matches to gain the ten points and victory in women's B singles.
In women's doubles, Mounties Olivia Adams and Kristyn Visser collected 10 first place points while Dal AC's Caiti MacCavour and Kelsey Henneberry ended in second. And in the B section of women's doubles MtA's Maggie Renouf and Maddy Morrissey claimed first spot with Sainte Anne's Allyson Greene and Ashley Richard in second.
The A section of men's doubles had some very close and entertaining rallies with several matches playing the third tiebreaker game. Mounties duo of Michael Miller and Hamza Munawar finished in second spot as they were defeated by King's team of Sam White and Ben Van Ryn. The Mounties team of Riley Shewan and John Lynch clinched first place in the B section with the Dal AC team of Andrew Sytsma and Allistair Ling in second.
The most competitive category of play for the day was in mixed doubles as three teams ended tied for first place. By use of a tie-breaking procedure Mount Allison's team of Jaryd Morrissey and Gillian Tetlow took first place honors followed by Dal AC's team of Andrew Sytsma and Jordan Bujold and in third, the King's team of Sam White and Maddie Alvarez. The Mounties second mixed team of John Lynch and Meghan Adams went 3-0 to win their section with the Sainte Anne duo of David Landry and Victoria Roberts in second.
The second tournament of 2016 will be hosted in Halifax over the January 22-23 weekend at University of King's College.
